Sportsbook Standard Rules For Horse Racing Wagering

If a wager is placed prior to the official track’s race time, the bettor will have action on the selected horse. The ticket time must reflect a time prior to the official track time. All past-posts, regardless of win or loss, will be deemed no action.

Races are graded upon the results being posted.

Betting limits and maximum payouts vary by track.

All scratches will be deemed no action in the betting combinations in which they were involved, unless alternative payout is provided by the track with the scratched combination.

When wagering on coupled horses, if one horse scratches, the bettor will still have action on all other horses. A refund will only be applicable if all coupled horses are scratched.

A horse has action if it leaves the starting gate. The sportsbook recognizes the official result and track payout as supervised by the stewards and racing authority governing the track. The sportsbook only recognizes the correct tote board results and will not entertain refunds, wins or no action on tickets in which a horse is disqualified or awarded additional purse money as a result of testing or post official race steward action.

Coupled horses – that is, horses that belong to one owner or are trained by one trainer – running in the same race are “coupled” together as a single entry. When the bettor bets on one, the other horse(s) is included. The coupled horses are usually listed, for example, as 1 and 1a. When one of the coupled horses wins, both horses win. In the event of a scratch, the bettor has action on the remaining coupled horse(s).

If there are many horses running in one race, several horses may be grouped together to be “field horses.” For payouts and refunds, the same rules apply as to coupled entries.
