Red Sox top Orioles, inch closer to playoffs
Sunday, September 20th, 2009 - 12:00 am

By Craig Macleish - San Jose, Costa Rica - J.D. Drew went 3-for-5 with a homer, drove in four runs and scored twice to lead the Red Sox to an 11-5 victory over the Orioles in the middle test of a three-game set from Camden Yards.

Jon Lester (14-7) won his fourth straight start and is unbeaten in his last 11 starts (6-0) after going six-plus frames and giving up three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis both had an RBI and scored twice for the Red Sox, who have won two in a row and nine of 10 overall. Mike Lowell and Josh Reddick each drove in a pair of runs, with Reddick and Brian Anderson both homering in the contest.

With the win, the Sox stayed six games behind the AL East-leading Yankees, who beat Seattle later Saturday, and dropped their magic number to nine games over Texas to clinch the AL wild card.

David Hernandez lasted six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits to get a no-decision.

"You're encouraged by how Hernandez threw," said Baltimore manager Dave Trembley. "Obviously, you'redisappointed thatyou lostand you're disappointed that you lost in the fashion you did. The game got out of hand after he left." Ty Wigginton had a pair of solo homers and Matt Wieters went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Orioles, who have dropped three straight and five of seven overall. Melvin Mora and Felix Pie both stroked solo homers in the setback.

With the game tied, Boston took the lead in the seventh stanza. With Matt Albers (2-6) on the hill, Dustin Pedroia had a leadoff single and nabbed second before Victor Martinez' groundout moved him to third. Youkilis' base hit plated the runner for a 4-3 lead. Alberto Castillo was then called on in relief and yielded a double to Ortiz. Drew and Lowell followed with RBI singles to make it 6-3.

Beantown broke the game wide open in the eighth. Ortiz offered a sac fly, Drew had a three-run homer and Anderson followed with a solo shot to balloon the visitors' lead to 11-3.

Wigginton and Pie had back-to-back solo homers in the ninth off Manny Delcarmen.

Guillermo Rodriguez and Jeff Fiorentino both walked, and Ramon Ramirez was brought in from the bullpen. Michael Aubrey popped up and Cesar Izturis walked to load the bases. However, Wieters grounded into a double play to end the game.

The O's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Brian Roberts led off with a double, moved to third on Izturis' single and crossed home on Wieters' base hit.

"The first inning started out looking like it had the chance to be a tough inning. We got the big double play," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona.

Reddick had a two-run homer in the second, but Wigginton's leadoff blast to left in the home portion tied it up at 2-2. Mora opened the fourth with a homer to left field, which gave Baltimore a 3-2 edge.

Ortiz opened the sixth with a double, moved to third on Drew's groundout and scored to tie it up as Lowell singled to left field.

Game Notes Martinez went 1-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games.

Pedroia has hit in 11 straight...Lester has owned the Orioles over the course of his career, posting a perfect 10-0 in 12 starts. This year has been more of the same, as he has beaten them four times...Boston has won nine of 10 overall and 15 of 17 against Baltimore this season...Boston has won seven of the eight matchups held in Camden Yards between these teams this season and over the last 28 meetings between the divisional foes, the Red Sox have won 24 times.
